WESLACO, T3XAS - Mary Jane Calvillo Lucas of Weslaco, Texas went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 23, 2021, at the age of 87. Born in Mercedes, she was the eldest child of Jose Salazar Calvillo Sr. and Francisca Olivarez-Calvillo.
She attended Mercedes ISD schools and graduated in 1953. After her high school graduation, she continued her education at Pan American University, where she received a bachelor's degree in Education. She taught for a total of 53 years. Of those 53 years, she taught in Santa Maria, San Antonio and 39 years were with the Weslaco Independent School District, where she taught special needs children both at the elementary and secondary levels. She retired from Weslaco ISD on May 31, 2006.
Mary Jane always had a great love and devotion to the Lord as well as to her place of worship, the Basilica of San Juan del Valle in San Juan, Texas. She served as a volunteer at the Basilica in the capacity of Eucharistic Minister for eighteen years. Aside from her services at the Basilica, Mary Jane was very faithful as a charitable member of many religious, and civil organizations which she financially supported for many years.
She very much enjoyed interacting with her long-time friends and helping others. Among them, were several volunteers from the Basilica who became very close to her and together, provided many hours of service. She maintained communication with them until it was no longer possible.
Mary Jane is preceded in death by her parents, Jose Salazar Calvillo and Francisca Olivarez Calvillo, her first husband, Alan Lucas, a son, Matthew Alan Lucas, her second husband, Richard McCorrison, a sister, Marcelina Garcia, and her brothers Nicolas, Simon and Alonzo Calvillo.
She is survived by her brothers Joe Calvillo Jr. and Frank Calvillo of Weslaco, several nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law, grandnephews and nieces, and numerous cousins.
Visitation will be held at McCaleb Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 28th from 6-9 pm. The funeral mass will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2021, at 10 am at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery. The family is asking that masks be worn at all services. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to the Basilica of San Juan on her behalf.
The Calvillo family thanks everyone for uplifting Mary Jane and her entire family in prayer before our Lord and for reaching out to them both in memory and in celebration of Mary Jane's life.
