Actor, Songwriter. A rhythm and blues musician in the 1940s and 1950s, he wrote the song "Break It to Me Gently", which was a top hit for singer Brenda Lee in 1962. He began an acting career in 1974, and appeared in motion pictures such as The Verdict" (1982), "School Daze" (1988), Malcolm X (1992) and the "The Saint of Fort Washington" (1993).
