Robert Charles Mathis was born on November 21, 1941 in Sparta, Illinois to Wallace Pershing Mathis and Wanda Louise Flanagan Mathis. Robert had a happy childhood playing with his brother Dick, and his cousins.

Robert accepted the Lord as his Savior and was baptized in December, 1954.

Robert entered the United States Army in 1968. He was just shy of 18 years old, so his father had to give consent. His basic training took place at Fort Ord, California, with his advanced training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. As the Berlin Crisis began building he was sent to Fort Stewart, Georgia for advanced training, then to Augsburg, Germany.

While Robert was in the Army he served two tours in Germany, he was stationed at Fort Hood, Fort Bliss, Hawaii, two tours in Vietnam, Fort Bragg, and two tours at West Point Military Academy where he taught Russian Doctrine and Military Map Reading. Robert retired from West Point after serving 20 years. His Military Record resonates with success. He was a man of character, determination and distinction.

Robert moved to Bryan, Texas where he accepted a position with Allen Academy. He then went to work at Texas A&M University where he held various positions until his retirement in 2005.

Robert and Kathie married in 1987. Their marriage blended their children, Robert, Tiffany, Andrew and Christopher. Blending their families was a challenge, but with time and a lot of patience they made it work.

God poured out his grace and mercy on all of them. He took the broken pieces of their lives and put them back together. He taught them that marriage vows were not made to each other but to God. They believe in "death do we part", and stayed married until Kathie passed in 2019.

Robert loved all of his children from the beginning until his dying day. His love had no end. He was crazy in love with his grandchildren. They taught him patience and tolerance. Nina said it best to Kathie once, "Grandma you are the luckiest girl in the whole wide world because you have my Grandpa!"

Bob was preceded in death by Kathie, his wife; Wallace and Wanda, his parents; Richard, his brother; and his granddaughter, Delilah Moutray.

Bob is survived by his children: Robert and wife Katja of Bryan, Tiffany and husband Kevin of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Andrew and wife Janeth of Hearne, and Chris and wife Rebecca of Normangee. Bob also has many grandchildren: Colin, Nila, Cora, Nina, Katie, Zach, Jake, Tyner, Brittany, and Paul.

Philippians 4:13–I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
