Athol Gilmore (Gil) Altman II, 69, of Columbia, SC, passed away Sunday, July 18th, at Prisma Health - Greer.

Gil was born in Florence, SC on August 10, 1951, a son of the late Francis and Elizabeth Altman. He is survived by two sisters; Peggy McClees (William); Sandra Bond (George), two brothers; Marion Altman (Donna), Jody Weaver; and three granddaughters; Paitin, Reilly, and Sutton Altman. In addition to his parents, Gil was also predeceased by a son, Gil Altman.

Gil retired from the United States Army and later was a self-employed private detective. During his time in service, he received numerous medals and awards, National Defense Service Medal, Army Accommodations Medal, Good Conduct Medal (6 times), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Expert Badge M-16, Expert Badge Hand Grenade, Expert Badge.38 caliber pistol, Expert Badge.45 caliber pistol, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (3 times), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3 times), Kuwait Liberation Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Bronze Service Stars, Meritorious Service Medal, and he served as a CID Special Agent for 9 years and 4 months.

A memorial service, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at 1 PM, at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery 114 East Trinity Road, Johnsonville, SC 29555.
