John was raised in Missoula. Upon his graduation from Loyola Sacred Heart High School he attended Helena Vo-Tech. He lived in Seattle, Washington for a time and then moved back to Missoula and worked for NitroGreen and later for Lafarge North America.
On October 7, 1994 John married Kathy Thomas of Missoula. They were divorced in 2008 but continued to be friends. Kathy was his best friend and caregiver throughout his medical journey ending with his death from pancreatic cancer.
He is a survived by his best friend Kathy Mickelson, their daughters Katy Mickelson and Jenny (Happy) Mickelson both of Missoula. Siblings Paul (Sue) Mickelson of Jefferson City, MT, Kris (Colin) Hardy, Dennis (Lynne) Mickelson all of Missoula, Kevin (Lynda) Mickelson of Seeley Lake, Chad (Michele) Mickelson of Livingston and Amy (Poul) Andersen of Santa Barbara, CA, along with several nieces and nephews.
There will be a gathering of friends and family and the scattering of John's remains later at Lake Inez where John spent time there throughout his life at his aunt Dorothy Simpson's cabin and with his cousin Mary Simpson while growing up.
John, Kathy and family would like to thank Dr. Akaash Acharya for his advice, kindness and wonderful care. We also want to thank Hospice of Missoula for the compassionate care they gave John.
John will be sorely missed by his family and friends. He is in a better place now without pain and with his mother and father and his brother Peter. Godspeed John until we all meet again.
