Dr. Koehler was born in Lansing, Michigan and grew up in Evansville, Indiana. After completing high school, he entered MIT and was graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He then went on to study at Stanford University where he earned a PhD in electrical engineering.
He retired at the age of 63 after a long career in the Applied Physics and Ocean Engineering Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. While at WHOI he designed and developed instrumentation that measured the physical properties of the ocean and he mentored colleagues and students.
After retirement he worked part time as a consultant for Mc Lane Lab at the Falmouth Technology Park. He also served on the Falmouth energy committee where he compiled data about the energy use of the town's buildings and transport system.
As an avid sailor he enjoyed day trips on Vineyard Sound. He was also an accomplished folk dancer and, together with his wife, he traveled to many music festivals and several foreign countries. He was a devoted stepfather and grandfather.
He was predeceased by his brother, Jay Malcom Koehler. Besides his wife he leaves behind his stepdaughter, Corinne Jacobson, and her husband, Adel Chefridi, and two granddaughters, Yasmin Chefridi and Amira Chefridi.
Burial was private and a celebration of his life is planned for later in the year.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to VNA Hospice of Cape Cod.
