Hunter H. Akers Jr., 76, of Waynesboro, died unexpectedly early Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at his residence.

He was born in Roanoke, May 5, 1934, the son of the late Hunter H. Sr. and Lois Nininger Akers.

He was a United States Navy Veteran, having earned the rank of LTJG, a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, retired in 1992 after 32 years of service, with the last being in the Lycra department of the former E.I. DuPont of Waynesboro and was a long time member of the Waynesboro Elks Lodge 2270.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, W. Hennie Akers; his two daughters, Cynthia Spangler and her husband, Thomas, of Richmond, and Tamara Horning and her husband, Barry, of Chillicothe, Ohio; six grandchildren, Sara Beth Horning O'Rourke and her husband, Aaron, Jaimie Horning, Paul Horning, Hunter Spangler, Kemp Spangler, and Peyton Spangler; a brother, Wallace Brown Akers and his wife, Stephanie, of Purcellville; as well as two nieces and a number of cousins.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2011, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, by Pastor Eric Childers, followed by a memorial service by the Waynesboro Elks Lodge 2270.

Military Rites will be provided by Stuarts Draft VFW Post 9339.

A private family inurnment will follow at a later date.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and friends attending the service.

There will be no viewing or visitation at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association Central Virginia, 3025, Berkmar Drive #7 Charlottesville,VA 22901 or the Waynesboro Elks Lodge 2270, P.O. Box 246, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
