Rev. Joe Wallace Anderson left his earthly home on July 17, 2021, to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Joe was born on May 9, 1926, to Zelphrea C. and Jesse Franklin Anderson of Madris, Texas.
At the age of 17 Joe volunteered and joined the Navy. He served 3 years fighting in the Philippines before leaving the Navy.
In 1947 Bro. Joe married his wife, of 59 years, Bobbie Mills. He enlisted in the Army in February of 1948. There were no jobs to be had after the war, so he and his wife decided he would go back into the military. During his 18 years in the service he had the chance to travel with his family and experience the different cultures and religions around the world. God allowed him to have his family with him except for the time he was fighting in Vietnam. During the time he was in the Army God was dealing with him to surrender to His service. He had been saved after he got out of the Navy, and thought he was doing ok. God dealt with him for several years about becoming a minister. He used the excuse that he was trained to kill; God knew better. In 1962, he could run no more. In a barracks at Fort Hood the Lord whipped him to his knees and he said yes, he would be whatever God wanted him to be. Before long Bro. Joe knew God wanted him to preach. Upon retiring from the Army he enrolled in college. It was not easy to work and study and make a living for his family, but God met every need and showed His will in their lives. Bro. Joe was licensed to preach by Fairview Baptist Church in Killeen, Texas, in 1962. In 1969 God called him to his first church where he was ordained as a pastor.
From 1969 until November of 1989 Bro. Joe pastored in several churches in Texas including Pleasant Hill in Bryans Mill, First Baptist Church in Simms, Springhill Baptist Church in Dekalb, Bethsaida Y Baptist Church in Atlanta, Lakeway Baptist Church in Paris, and First Baptist Church in Blossom.
In 1989 Bro. Joe had to retire from pastoring because of his health. God allowed him to serve as interim pastor for eight churches. He supplied in every church in the association except one. God still had work for Bobbie and him to do, Bro. Joe was able to organize a group of retirees to build and assist churches that needed help. In 11 years they assisted about 200 churches from Mexico to Minnesota. Some were remodels, others were new, and all of them loved the Lord. He had the opportunity to preach in almost every one of them. They saw many souls saved through this ministry.
After 11 years he had to retire because he could no longer climb the ladders.
God took Bobbie home after a bout with breast cancer and 1 year later God gave Bro. Joe another chance at happiness. He put Jackie Muse in his life, and they were married on July 22, 2006. Together they continued to serve where ever God led them.
He is preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; 3 sisters; wife, Bobbie; grandsons, Weldon and James.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie; sons, Sam Anderson and Geary Anderson; daughter, Diana Maxwell and husband Gary; stepson, Keith Muse; grandchildren, Melonie Anderson, Scott Anderson, Sheila and David West, Pia Maxwell, Brooks and Sadie Anderson, Jodie and Natasha Anderson, Leah Gerig, Katherine Muse- Wagonknecht, Chase Muse; 15 great grandchildren, 4 great- great grandchildren; sister, Connie Sommerville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Hanner Funeral Service Thursday, July 22 from 6-8 pm. There will be a celebration of his life at First Baptist Church in Queen City, Texas, on Friday, July 23, 2021 at 1:00 pm. Interment will be in Queen City Cemetery.
