Korean War- May 1952 - April 1954. I was drafted in May of 1952 and was sent to Fort Leonard Wood, MO, for Basic Training for eight weeks, after which I stayed for eight more weeks to attend Cooking and Baking School. I went home for two weeks and then had orders to be shipped out for Japan.
I rode a train from Iowa to San Francisco, CA, where I stayed for about three weeks. I spent 13 days on an ocean liner and arrived in Japan just six months after being drafted. I spent my first Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day overseas in Japan. I did the cooking and baking for 150 men. I did the cooking for the first two months and the baking for about three months. I stayed in Japan until April of 1953 when I left for Korea.
I was stationed in Pusan, Korea, and was there six months until the cease-fire. I cooked for the men in a mess tent most of the time I was there. We had to practice taking the tent down and putting it back up every week or so, but the last two months before we left Korea we had a mess hall to cook in. We left Korea in October of 1953 and returned to northern Japan until March of 1954. I spent my second Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day overseas in Japan.
I arrived in Colorado in March and I stayed until April 18, 1954, when I was discharged after months of service. I had reached the rank of sergeant at the time of my discharge. I was glad to have served my country.
He received two bronze Stars, the U.S. Service Medal, the Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Larry moved to Marshalltown, Iowa and worked as a meat manager for Safeway Stores in Marshalltown and Des Moines, Iowa for 20 years. It was there in Marshalltown that he met his first wife, Mae Luella and they would go on to marry June 27, 1956. Larry and Mae had two sons, Pat and Mike. A job transfer took the family to Port Arthur, TX and Larry worked as a meat cutter for HEB stores for 15 years of his career. Larry and Mae were married nearly 50 years when she passed away in 2003.
Now in Oklahoma City, Larry attended Chapel Hill United Methodist. Larry was involved in the Men's Bible studies, Hearts and Hands, dominoes and Men's Club Mission group. In a singles group sponsored by the church, he met Betty Hembree and they were married January 2005.
Both wives Mae Luella Bishop and Betty Grace Bishop precede Larry in death. He is survived by his sons Pat and Michelle Bishop and Mike and Ginger Bishop; grandchildren Tia, Sara, Amanda, Summer, Bradley and Michael, Jr.; great grandchildren Abigail and Laylon and brother Bob Bishop. Larry also leaves a church family who will miss him greatly.
