Bertha nee Zehner-Ratcliff Giltner was the daughter of Sarah CATHERINE Ratcliff and an unknown ZEHNER of Tamaqua, Schuylkill Co., Pa.. Bertha's mother, S. Catherine Ratcliff later married 22 October 1883 to the Rev. William Black Burk who was the Episcopal rector in Tamaqua, Pa. Bertha was the granddaughter of Samuel and Mary Ratcliff.
In the 1880 census, Bertha is found in Tamaqua, Pa., listed as Bertha Zehner, age 5, a boarder with her grandmother, Mary Ratcliff, widow, as head and with uncle, Robert Ratcliff and her mother Kate Ratcliff who is listed as single.
In the 1890 Schuylkill County Census-Directory, Bertha is found, listed as Bertha Ratcliff with her grandmother, Mary Ratcliff, widow with her son, Robert J. age 37.
On 3 October 1895 in Camden, Camden Co., New Jersey, Bertha married to Joseph O Giltner. She is listed as Bertha Ratcliff on the marriage license.
In the 1910 Census, Bertha's mother, S. Catherine Ratcliff Burk states that she has birthed 3 children and two were now living. Those two living were her children, Mary Agnes and Paul H. Burk from the union with the Rev William B. Burk. Bertha who died in 1909 was S. Catherine Ratcliff's first born child.
Bertha's Pennsylvania death certificate has Samuel Ratcliff and Catherine Ratcliff listed as her parents, this information was listed incorrectly by the undertaker "Griffith" who gave the information. Samuel was Bertha's grandfather, and her mother was indeed the "Sarah CATHERINE Ratcliff".
When Bertha and Joseph O. Giltner's son, Paul R. Giltner was baptised, Bertha's maiden name was listed as Burk. This surname "Burk" was Bertha's mother, S. Catherine's married name at the time of this event.
