Jack H. Townsend M.D. of Grand Rapids, Michigan passed away at Clark Retirement Community in Grand Rapids on March 29, 2020 at the age of 91. A beloved family man and trusted physician, Dr. Townsend was predeceased by his daughter, Stephanie Townsend, and his wife of 62 years, Joanne Hertz Townsend. Dr. Townsend, a graduate of Montague High School, Western Michigan University and the University of Michigan School of Medicine, was a longtime resident of the Grand Rapids area. He practiced internal medicine there for more than four decades, beginning in the mid 1950s, after a term of service as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He also was very involved in medical education at Blodgett Memorial Hospital in Grand Rapids, and served as its Chief of Medicine for several years.

Surviving are his sons, Stephen Cronen-Townsend of Greenfield, Massachusetts, Joel Townsend of Grand Rapids, and Jeffrey Townsend of Ellicott City, Maryland, his brother, Charles Townsend of Montague, Michigan, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The "Eldy" Townsend Memorial Scholarship, Montague Area Public Schools, 4882 Stanton Blvd., Montague, Michigan 49437.
