Salvadoran Statesman. He served as the President of El Salvador from July 1, 1972 to July 1, 1977. He entered the Captain General Gerardo Barrios military school in 1945 and graduated as a second lieutenant four years later. After a lengthy military career, he was chosen by outgoing President Fidel Sanchez Hernandez to be the presidential candidate for the National Conciliation Party in the 1972 presidential election. After he was declared president, there was an attempted coup, but it was unsuccessful. He became president in July of 1972 and served for the next five years until stepping down in 1977. His administration was marked by achievements in various areas along with a harsh approach to the left wing protests in the country. He left office in 1977 and also left the country for the next fifteen years. In 1992, he returned to El Salvador.
