Musician. A violinist and vocalist, he was a founding member of the progressive, pop-rock band "Kansas." Adopted at the age of four and named Robert Eugene Steinhardt, he moved with his family to Kansas. Due to his father's position with the University of Kansas music department, Robby traveled with his family to Europe and during his youth, he learned to play the violin. Formed in Topeka, Kansas, initially called "White Clover," Steinhardt joined the ensemble in 1972 prior to their name-change to "Kansas." After signing with Don Kirshner's label, they recorded their self-titled debut album in 1974. This was followed with "Songs for America" (1975) and "Masque" (1975). It would be the album "Leftoverture" (1976) which first garnered commercial success from the gold single "Carry On Wayward Son." The hit achieved a number 11 placing on the Billboard Charts in February 1977. The following album "Point of No Return" (1977) featured the single of the same name which achieved a Top 30 chart placing and their most successful hit "Dust In the Wind" which earned gold record status and a number 6 placing in February 1978. Other Top 40 singles include "People of the South Wind" (1979), "Hold On" (1980) and "Play the Game Tonight" (1982). He departed "Kansas" in 1982 and formed the group "Steinhart-Moon" with drummer Richard 'Moon' Calhoun. During the late 1990s, Steinhart returned to a later lineup with "Kansas." He died of complications from acute pancreatitis.
