Richard, 77, of Caro, passed away on Monday, July 12, 2021 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Community in Caro. Rich was the son of the late Lyman & Kathleen (Sweeney) Gibbs.
He grew up in Elmira and graduated from the Elmira Free Academy with the class of 1962. Rich continued his education at Syracuse University, graduating with a degree in business and marketing.
He was united in marriage with Marty Shoemaker on April 27, 1968 in Elmira, and the couple has cherished more than fifty-three years together. Rich was first employed in New York by Texaco as a sales representative and later by SKF. He then took a position with Facet where he sold fuel pumps until moving with his family to Caro in 1983 to begin work at Walbro/TI. Rich retired in 2007 which allowed him to focus on his true passions in life, especially cars and car racing. He had a varied collection of antique and hot rod cars through the years and enjoyed attending car shows. He rarely missed his weekly lunch meeting with friends at Wanigan's in Bay City to talk about cars. Rich also loved the outdoors, especially birds, and was an avid photographer. In his earlier years, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing, and racing remote-controlled cars, boats and planes with his sons.
Left to cherish Rich's memory are his wife, Marty Gibbs of Caro; three sons and their spouses, Rick & Sandra Gibbs of Martinsburg, West Virginia, Ron Gibbs of Lansing, Andy & Wendy Gibbs of Ramsey, Minnesota; two granddaughters, Emma and Jessica.
In addition to his parents, Rich was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Skip Gibbs.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service is being planned for a later date and will be announced as information becomes available.
