Samuel Oran Atkinson Jr., 94, passed away on June 21, 2014, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital, surrounded by loved ones. He was born Feb. 15, 1920, in Madison, the son of Samuel Atkinson Sr. and Nora (Shaw) Atkinson.

Oran grew up in Skowhegan and graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1938, where he was captain of the varsity football team. He later became a hand sewer at Norridgewock shoe shop, and worked at Sterns in Skowhegan and Waterville, as well as Levine's in Waterville.

Oran married Elizabeth "Betty" Michael on March 21, 1941. They enjoyed many years square dancing together and Oran also became a round dance caller. As an avid oil painter, he won numerous prizes at the Skowhegan Fair for his works of art. Oran loved to garden and bird watch, but mostly he treasured time spent with his family.

Oran is survived by his daughter, Patricia Bushey and husband Robert; grandchildren Tracy Deering, of Canaan, Steve Bushey, of Skowhegan, Jason Bushey and wife Laurie, of Waterville, Libby Foss and husband Jeff, of Madison, and Kate Brousseau and husband Eric, of Brunswick; great-granddaughters Mary Cates and husband Brandon, of Starks, Sarah Bushey, of Embden, and Raychel Bushey, of Anson; great-grandsons Miller and Logan Foss, of Madison; great-great-granddaughter McKenna Cate, of Starks, and another due in August; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, in February; a son, Michael, in 1965; brothers Eardley, Donald, Roy Earl, John and Bob; and sisters Ruth Steward, Ethel Lombard, Dorothy Moore, Catherine Lombard and Pauline West.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and caregivers of Hospice and a special thanks to Naomi Darling.
