Willis Richard Powell was born 1877 in Edgecombe County, NC, the youngest of 9 known children (6 boys / 3 girls) born to CSA Capt. William Henry Powell Sr. and his wife, Anne Blount Lawrence.

He was the paternal grandson of wealthy planter, Jesse Harrison Powell and his (1st) wife Sally Hester Moore; gr-grandson of William H. Powell & Mary Harrison of Edgecombe; and a direct descendant of George Powell & Ann Connor of Norfolk, VA who settled in Bertie County in the early 1700's. He was the maternal grandson of Dr. Josiah Lawrence & Mary Eliza Toole of Tarboro. His great uncle, Dr. Joseph J. Powell (1807-1861) was a prominent Halifax County physician who purchased an Edgecombe County farm in 1845 and developed it into "Coolmore" Plantation.

Willis never married, and cared for his aged mother after his father died. For a while, he farmed in Swift Creek, and later got into the insurance business.

Willis died in 1950, just about one month shy of his 73rd birthday.
