She was the paternal grandchild of Elder Joshua Lawrence, fiery pamphleteer and early member of Kehukee Free Will Baptists, and his wife, Mary Kight; and gr-grandchild of John Lawrence & Absilla Bell of Edgecombe. She was the maternal grandchild of Henry Irwin Toole II and Anne Blount of Edgecombe.
On May 24, 1854, the 20-year old married 25-year old planter, William Henry Powell of Edgecombe.
The couple would set up housekeeping in the Swift Creek section of Edgecombe County where William was a planter. They would become parents to 9 known children: Frank Powell Sr. (1854), Hester (c. 1857), Josiah (c. 1859), Mary Grainger (1860), William H. Jr. (1863), Robert (c. 1869), Kate (c. 1872), Jesse (c. 1874) and Willis Richard (1877).
When the Civil War broke out in April 1861, Anne was alredy mother of 4, and she was left to hold hearth and home together while her husband served valiantly as Capt of NC 17th, Co. I. Following the war, he returned to their farm where they lived out their days.
Anne was widowed in 1902 with the passing of her husband at age 74. They had been married 42 years. She survived another 9 years, passing in 1911 at age 75.
