John L. Adams Dies At Solon; Aged 74 Years

Lived Practically All His Life On Home Farm; Funeral Services to be Held Wednesday

Death claimed another leading pioneer of Johnson county, when Mr. John L. Adams of Salon passed away late Monday afternoon, August 15, at the home of his son in Iowa City.

The funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the methodist church at Salon with Rev. John Demas in charge. Brethern of Iowa City lodge No. 4, A. F. & A. M. will have charge of the ceremonials at the grave.
Mr. Adams had lived continously for 72 years in Cedar township, from the time of his birth, March 9, 1952. When he was but a few weeks old, his parents removed to the present Adams farm, two miles south of Salon, which was his home until his death.
His parents, Ebenezer M. Adams and Henrietta Lyon Adams, were among the first of three hardy pioneers, who braved the terrors of the unknown, in the then wild Iowa. The father came to Iowa in 1838 and the mother in 1841. To them and their chiildren, and to other pioneers of their type, Iowa owes her present high place in the civilization of the nation, which the children of the second and third generation are now enjoying.
Mr. Adams was always a power for right and justice in the community; his life being lived and his influence exerted for what was good and pure and true. He believed in the "gospel of labor" and in the dignity of a farmer's life, and drew his inspiration from growing things - the crops, the trees and the flowers, which he raised.

Member of United Brethern
Always strong and active, he never experienced a sick day throughout this long life until he was stricken last November. Since then he has been a patient sufferer, during the long months of a hopeless battle against a painful disease, which knew no respite, until death came to take it's toll.
As a young man, John L. Adams professed the Christian faith, becoming a member of the United Brethern church, whose Itinerant ministers in those early days, held meetings in the various school houses in the county. Subsequently he identified himself with the church at Solon.

On Sept. 6, 1876 Mr. Adams wed Isabel Keen, who survives, with two sons, Richard K, on the home farm; and Robert P., of Iowa City. The death of one daughter Georgia, the young bride of three months of Dr. Albertus J. Burge, of Iowa City, caused the greatest sorrow of the loving father's life, at her passing. Also mourning are his sister , Mrs. Lillie Fairall, widow of Herbert S. Fairall, former editor of the old Iowa City Republican, and her daughter, Henrietta, a gifted educator of Milwakee, Wis.

Mr. Adams took an active part in public enterprises.
For more than 40 years he served as president of the school board of Cedar township No. 9, which always maintained one of the best rural schools in the county. He was also president of the Salon Cemetary association for many years; served as director of of the Northwestern Farmers' Fire Insurance company of North Liberty and was always a leader in the work of the Johnson county Old Settler's Association.
These various activities gave him an unusually wide acquaintance throughout the county - and whereever he was known, there will be hearts filled with sorrow, today, as a legion of friends read of the death of this splendid and beloved pioneer.
