Leola Doris WIlliams Morgan. The 98 year old teenagerä was born January 10, 1917, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina to her proud and devoted parents, Lee Andrew and Grenada M. Williams. On Jan. 12, 2015. Leola began her education in Elizabeth City, and graduated from P.W. Moore High School, Elizabeth City, NC. Remembering her parents' old saying, "Aim high - The sky is the limit," she always tried to excel, and never settled for mediocrity; therefore, she was always an Honor Student. She earned her B.S. Degree Magna Cum Laude in Education from Elizabeth City State Normal School, now (ECSU,) and started teaching at age 16. Leola earned her Master's Degree in Administration & Supervision from New York University, Brooklyn, NY, in 1951. She taught in the public schools for 43 years; and was also an Elementary School Principal. She taught in Pender Co., Halifax Co., Camden Co. at Rosenwall School & Marian Anderson High School, and retired from Sheep Harney Elementary School in Elizabeth City in 1979. Mrs. Morgan was a strict educator who loved her students, and made sure they were prepared when you left her classroom. She was voted, Teacher of the Yearä 8 times throughout her career. On Dec. 20, 1942, she married her beloved husband who preceded her in death, Erskine E. Morgan, Sr. To that union they had a son, Erskine, II. Leola was a strong voice in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950's and 60's. When she walked and marched with her friends Martin Luther King, Jr., Andrew Young, and Ralph Abernathy, she walked with history. When she socialized with Alex Haley (her classmate), Duke Ellington, and Mahalia Jackson, she conversed with history. When she entertained Barbara Jordan, Coretta Scott King, and Marian Anderson, she was dining with history. Two years after her retirement, she became history when she was appointed the first African-American City Councilwoman in Elizabeth City. This honorable position was just one of the more than 47 community, civic, and educational recognitions bestowed upon her. She was a member of the ECSU General Alumni Association, NEA (Life Member), AARP, NCAE, National Association of University Women (Charter Member), Matrons Social Literary Club, George Washington Carver Floral Club (Hertford), Corner Stone Missionary Baptist Church, ECSU Booster Club, Board of Directors for River City Development Corporation, NAACP, was Assistant Director for the Girls Club of Elizabeth City (1938-1952); Order of the Eastern Star, and a Life Member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Left with beautiful memories are her son, Erskine E. Morgan, II (Anita) of Irvington, VA; grandson, Shelton Morgan of Greensboro, NC; her devoted sister, Velma Butts of Portsmouth, VA; two brothers who preceded her in death Medford Williams (Virginia), and Andrew, Saltä Williams Jr.(Rubenia); cousins Edna Staten of Norfolk, VA; Ira Martin of NY; adopted godson, Alton Holmes. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, Elizabeth City, NC.
