Ray Kelley
Boise, Idaho - At home, in his own bed, on his own terms, angels came and ushered Ray Kelley out of this world Sunday morning, July 11, 2021. The previous evening was spent in the living room surrounded by family before going to bed for the last time.
Ray was born in Prescott Arizona and traveled cross-country to Sweet Home Oregon with his sister and grandparents in the back of a modified flat-bed truck in 1942 when he was 9 years old. Ray left Sweet Home by himself at the age of 15 in 1948 and landed in Adrian, Oregon where he worked at the Stateline Store and graduated from High School. In December of 1952 he and five high school buddies joined the Navy. Ray served overseas and enjoyed his time in the Navy although he never did learn how to swim. On March 17, 1956, while stationed at the Alameda Naval Station in California he met Doris Krohn. They were married four months later and celebrate 65 years of marriage this month.
Ray and Doris moved their family to Nampa Idaho in 1957 and then to Boise in 1960. Ray worked learning the upholstery trade and opened Collister Upholstery in 1968. He sold Collister Upholstery and continued to work in his "home shop" saying that Doris would not let him retire until he was 90. He was simply an artist bringing joy and beauty into the lives of those who were fortunate to have him do work for them. He worked until his hands would no longer allow it at the age of 85.
More than anything Ray loved his family. He is survived by his wife Doris and sister Nola Cook. They have five children: Dan Kelley McBride, Terrie Kelley-Dunn, Mike Kelley, Greg Kelley, and Chris Kelley. Their spouses: Timm McBride, Dennis Dunn, Missi Kelley, and Tracee Kelley. Ray and Doris have 14 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, two cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews. At annual Christmas parties, with a twinkle in his eye Ray would turn to Doris with the entire family present and say: "Look at what we created."
A celebration of Ray's life will take place at the Boise Friends Church, 7750 Goddard Rd, Boise on Sunday July 18th at 7:00 PM with a reception following. Interment will take place at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery sometime in August.
