In 1944, Jeanette graduated from high school in Cincinnati, Ohio at 17 and began working downtown for Moore Business Forms. She wanted to go to college; and, in 1947, Jeanette started classes at Olivet Nazarene College in Illinois as a music major. She met Richard in their "Harmony" class. They became engaged on Christmas morning in 1950 and married on September 3, 1951. They had two daughters. During their 68-year marriage, they purchased nine homes and lived in six states.
Jeanette was very hard-working, both inside and outside of the home. Unlike many women of her day, she worked outside of the home all but 10 years of her working life and juggled the many demands on her time. Jeanette was an executive secretary and administrative assistant to engineers and Ph.D.'s, working at such organizations as General Electric, The Boeing Company, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Wells Fargo Bank.
Jeanette excelled at hospitality, and she always ensured that anyone who entered her house had plenty to eat and good conversation. She was a talented seamstress who designed, sewed, and hand-embroidered countless dresses, suits, matching hats and other accessories for herself and her daughters, who she also taught to sew. During retirement, she created many needlepoint, crewel and embroidery pieces, including personalized Christmas stockings for her family members. Her Christmas cookies were renowned within and outside the family. Grandchildren of Aurora neighbors recently dubbed Jeanette "The Cookie Grandma!"
Preceding her in death were her father William H. Ellwanger, her mother Bernice Trice Ellwanger, her sister Dorothy Ellwanger Sawyer, and her brother Charles William Ellwanger, Ph.D.
