Velma JoAn Jones, age 86 of Monroe, passed away on Monday, July 12, 2021, at ProMedica Regional Hospital of Monroe.

Velma was born on February 22, 1935, in Harrogate, Tennessee. She was one of three children born to the late James and Mary (Estes) Dunsmore. Velma graduated from Monroe High School in 1953. She met the love of her life, James Jones, in junior high school at Lincoln School in Monroe. They got married on August 8, 1953, at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church. They went on to spend over 67 wonderful years together. After raising her daughter, Velma worked as the Dietary Supervisor at Monroe ISD for many years.

Velma had been a member of the Monroe Missionary Baptist Church. In her free time, Velma was known for always keeping a clean house. She enjoyed traveling all over the country and collecting American cut glass with her husband. Most importantly, Velma loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Beloved wife of James Jones. Loving mother of Deborah (John) McGovern. Dearest Nama of Kaylynn (Benjamin) Schreiber and Garrett (Lauren Ruth) McGovern. Great nama of Breanne Schreiber, Delilah Schreiber, and baby girl McGovern who is expected in September 2021. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, special brothers in law, and sisters in law.

Along with her parents, Velma is preceded in death by her brothers: James Dunsmore, Jr. and Jack Dunsmore.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Sunday, July 18, 2021, at Rupp Funeral Home from 2:00 to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will take place on Monday, July 19, 2021, at Rupp Funeral Home starting at 11:00 am. Officiating is Pastor Roy Southerland. Burial will follow immediately to Roselawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Velma's honor to The Shriners or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
