Lawrence Hardy Fountain, Sr. was born 1872 in the Lower Fishing Creek section of Edgecombe County, the 9th of 11 known children (5 boys/6 girls) born to farmers Lawrence Fountain and his wife, Mary Eliza Cotton.

He was the paternal grandson of Loderick Fountain & Priscilla Dixon of Leggett, Edgecombe County, and a direct descendant early Edgecombe settlers, Solomon Fountain (1758-1836) and his wife, Auliff Coker. On his mother's side he was the maternal grandson John Llewelyn Cotton & Nancy Bell Penine Tart (Tartt) Johnson of Edgecombe Co.

On February 7, 1894 the 22-year old Lawrence married 17-year old Sallie M. Barnes. Between 1897-1913, they would have 5 children:

* Vinton Epstein Fountain (1897-1978)
* Irma McCray Fountain PRENTISS (1899-1994)
* Mabel Barnes Fountain (1903-1976)
* Reginald Morton Fountain (1908-1969)
* Congressman Lawrence H. Fountain, II (1913-2002)

Lawrence Hardy Fountain, Sr. spent his lifetime as a merchant/farmer in Edgecombe County.

He passed in 1918 at the young age of 46. His wife Sallie never remarried and remained a widow the next 46 years until her passing in 1964 at age 87.

His youngest son was the distinguished Congressman Lawrence H. Fountain II (1913-2002).
