What a glorious day as Herman "Moon" Mullins's faith became complete when he entered the gates of Heaven. Moon passed into eternity May 12, 2012, after a brief stay at Beacon Hospice in Longview. He was 87 years old.
Moon, a lifelong East Texan, was born May 20, 1924, in Livingston, Texas. He graduated from Carlisle High School and Stephen F. Austin State College. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
Moon's fondest memories were the years he coached at White Oak and the boys he had the privilege of coaching there. He was in the insurance business in Longview, and later retired as elementary school principal at West Rusk ISD. Moon was the Chairman of the Board of deacons at First Baptist Church in Henderson, where he taught the radio Bible class for many years. He also served on the Laneville school board and was a Mason.
Moon loved the Lord, his family, sports (Rangers and Mavericks), the church and singing (especially hymns). He had many friends and kept in touch with all of them. As a gifted storyteller and public speaker, moon loved making people laugh. He entertained with stories about his childhood spent growing up on the Grissom tank farm in Carlisle. He enjoyed laughing at himself and being the center of attention. Most of all, Moon's passion was sharing his faith and his love of the Lord, which he did as long as he lived. As a devoted husband, exceptional father, doting grandfather and great friend, he will be missed.
Moon is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Jo Sattes Mullins; sons and daughters-in-laws, Joe and Vicki Mullins of Salado, Pat and Karen Mullins of Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Janis and Bobby Robertson of Henderson; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
