SAMUEL STANLEY ALLEN Born: July 10, 1859…. Sparta, Randolph, Illinois Married: September 05, 1906…. Elsinore, Riverside, California To Lillian May Tuell Died: March 27, 1930… Riverside, California Buried: Olivewood Cemetery, Riverside, California Sam Allen preferred to be called "SS". It was very fashionable for men to go by their initials in the early 1900's. Grandfather started with nothing and left a sizable estate at the time of his death. I know he owned several houses and an apartment house in Riverside. SS didn't like school and left home at seventeen, he traveled to St, Louis. Where he talked the owner of a hauling company into letting him work with a team of draft horses that had killed a man. The team was oversized and the male would try to smash a man that entered his stall. This is how the last driver had been killed. SS simply poked the big horse on one side and while he was slamming into the wall, SS slipped up to his head on the other side. The big horses neck was so large that the harness collar had pinched the top of his neck, making a painful sore. SS took care of the sore and then he went to his boss and explained the problem. He asked to have a special collars made to fit the team and the boss agreed. With the special collars and padding, Grandfather had no problem driving the team. They were hauling heavy loads through a town where they had to stop and double team to get up a hill. This team was so strong that if Grandfather could get a good start they could pull the hill without stopping to double hitch. In the process of running the hill their shoes would make sparks fly off the cobblestone road. People got so they would come out of the stores, just to watch this team go by. The owner came to Grandfather and said he had a great offer from a brewery for the team but he wouldn't sell unless Grandfather Okayed it and offered the choice of any other team. Breweries paid
