LILLIAN MAY TUELL Born: April 07, 1872…. Clarksburg, Decatur, Indiana Died: August 05, 1959… Watsonville, Santa Cruz, California Buried: Olivewood Cemetery, Riverside, California When my sister started to talk grandmother didn't like the idea of being called "Grandmother", so we called her "GramG-3-20mie ". Since she didn't like her name "Lillian", "Grammie" stuck except for her brothers and sisters, which always called her "Sis". Grammie left home at eighteen and traveled by train to Riverside, California. Her oldest brother, SR, had located in Riverside and eventually the whole Tuell clan would move from Indiana to the Riverside area. The Tuells stuck together. In the early 1900's it was hard for a woman to make a living. Grammie worked as a seamstress for rich people. She was a perfectionist on sewing and many other things. Then she talked a "Sweet Shop" owner into letting her work for him. She cleaned up the shop and ended up managing it. A sweets shop was like a bakery/coffee shop. She loved this job and resented it when after marriage SS made her quit. It was a disgrace to have one's wife work in the early 1900's. After SS's death in 1930, Grammie came down with a sever case of Rheumatoid Arthritis. For six months her joints were swollen and she suffered extreme pain. The doctors at that time didn't know what it was and were of little help. After six months, the swelling went away, but every joint was left unmovable. She didn't give up like others, but worked until she managed to walk and feed herself. She rocked or bounced up and down to get out of a chair until she lit on her feet. We had great times together especially going to town in her "golf cart" At that time, golf carts were unheard of…. So it was an electric cart designed for the handicapped. During World War II she couldn't go to town without picking up soldiers
