Retired Railroader, Frank Bowen, Dies

Frank Bowen, 82, retired employee of Union Pacific Railroad and Veteran of the Spanish American War, died Saturday afternoon in a local hospital following a long illness. Mr. Bowen made his home with his daughter and her family the John D. Harringtons 1216 West Fifth. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Livingston-Sonderman Funeral Home. The Rev. Harvey Clark, will officiate. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside in Grand Island Cemetery by members of Hall county VFW Post 1347.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 Monday evening at Livingston-Sonderman Funeral Home. the family requests rememberences be through the memorial wreath at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Mr. Bowen was born Dec. 14, 1881, at Niobrara, the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Bowen. when he was a child, the family came to Grand Island.

With the outbreak of the Spanish American War, he enlisted in the United States Army at Cheyenne. HE served in combat in the Philippines with Co. H, 1st Battalion, Wyoming Infantry volunteers.

After an honorable discharge, he returned to Grand Island and became an employee of the Union Pacific Railroad. He worked as a fireman, engineer and hostler in the local yards. He retired Dec. 14, 1945.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Charles E. Norris Camp of the United Spanish War Veterans and had served as commander of the post. He was past State Commander of the United Spanish War Veterans.

Mr. Bowen was affiliated with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Fireman and Engineman; the Union Pacific Old Timers Club; the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees and the Hall County VFW Post 1347.

He and Anna M. Schieck were married Oct. 11, 1905, at Shelton. they made their only home at Grand Island. Following his retirement, they traveled extensively until Mrs. Bowen's health failed. She died Sept. 11, 1957. MR. Bowen maintained his home until two years ago, when he went to reside with the Harringtons.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. D. Harrington, Grand Island; Mrs. Henry Timpke, Ogden, Utah; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
