Andrew Hart (Andy) Caldwell was born February 14, 1920 in Glasgow, Scotland and passed away November 08, 2007 in Roanoke, Virginia. A truly honorable and gentle man. A man of many accomplishments and talents who spent his life loving and caring for his family and helping others. During WWII, he served in the pacific in the United States Air Force as a B-29 bomber pilot. He married Marie Lefebvre in 1943 and graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Engineering. He worked as an engineer for General Electric from 1946 to retirement, first in Schenectady, N.Y., then in Salem, Va. Andy and his wife retired to Cape Carteret in coastal North Carolina to live by the sea for 25 years. He was an artist, a sailor, a glider pilot, an environmentalist and a fisherman who loved boating of all kinds. Andy was a volunteer EMT for 12 years and a volunteer literacy instructor for 20 years. He taught his children and grandchildren to sail and ski, on the water and on the snow. Two years ago they moved back to Roanoke to be closer to the family and he enjoyed kayaking and walking at Carvin's Cove with his daughters. Andy is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marie Lefebvre Caldwell; son, Andrew J. Caldwell of Beckley W.Va.; daughter, Janet Caldwell Sachs and her husband Fred of Roanoke, and daughter, Ann Caldwell Denton of Roanoke; sister, Ann Matthews and her husband Chester of Alplaus, N.Y.; grandchildren are Zachary Sheeran of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Andrew (Drew) Caldwell of Huntington, W.Va., Sarah Caldwell Edwards of Morgantown, W.Va., and Sarah Sachs of Baltimore, Md.; one great-grandson , Seth Edwards of Morgantown, W.Va.
