Gales Ferry - John Lee "Woodie" Woodward, 77, of Gales Ferry, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London. John was born May 8, 1944, in Long Beach, Calif., to John Woodward and Wanda Lusk Woodward.
He married Karen "Dee" Hollingsworth Woodward; she survives him.

John was raised in San Diego, Calif., and moved to Seattle, Wash., where his love of the Seattle Seahawks began. While traveling for work to Key West, Fla., he met the love of his life Dee.
They eventually settled in Groton, where John worked for General Dynamics for 30 years. John also proudly served in the Reserves for the U.S. Army National Guard for over twenty years.

Over his life, he enjoyed camping, traveling and a good Hawaiian shirt. Anyone that knew him knew he enjoyed taking his time and really enjoying whatever he was doing. He was a true gearhead who knew anything and everything about cars. With so much life left to live, he was taken too soon from us at 77 years young.
John made friends with everyone, and was known for his kindness and generosity. He will be missed by many.

Besides his wife of 33 years Dee, he is also survived by his daughter, Lindsey Wetherell and her husband Richard, as well as their two daughters, Hayden and Presley;
daughter Jessica Jackson and son Joseph of Texas; daughter Michelle Woodward and her children from Idaho;
brothers, Steve Woodward and his wife Lori, Dan Woodward and his wife Diane and Chris Woodward and his partner Sarah Richards; and sister Ruth Woodward. Along with his parents, John is preceded in death by his sister Mary Woodward.

A Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 29, followed by a funeral service beginning at 6 p.m. at the Byles Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames Street in Groton.
A private burial will be held at the Connecticut Veterans Cemetery in Middletown. Flowers are welcome or donations can be made in John's memory to the America Cancer Society, 111 Founders Plaza 2nd Floor, East Hartford, CT 06108.
