James was the son of Cullen Greene and Obelia Jordan Story, he had 7 siblings. He was educated in the Macon County School System. He Enlisted in the U. S. Army and received his Honorable Discharge. Upon his return home, he was employed with the Montezuma Police Department in Montezuma, Georgia as a Police Officer. He later was employed with Georgia Pacific in Vienna, Georgia. He was passionate about the game of golf.
He was preceded in death by 1 son, Joseph Hannor, 2 brothers, Jackie Story and Billie Story and his step-father, Walter Ben Story Sr.
