After serving in the US Army, James and his young family moved to Jackson, MS, eventually settling in Pearl and rearing three sons. He made his living selling building materials and real estate which afforded him the opportunity to make friends all over the state. He also gained many friends being active in Masonry as a 32nd Degree Master Mason, as a Shriner, and serving as Worthy Patron in The Order of Eastern Star. He was ordained as a Deacon at Grandview Baptist Church and also served as a Deacon at First Baptist Church of Pearl and Eastside Baptist Church.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Montell Gilmore, Margie McDiarmid, Cujette Hood, Wendell Gilmore, and Melvin Gilmore.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Alfa Mae Rigdon Gilmore; sons James "Jim" Gilmore (Nita) of Brandon, MS; David (Teresa) of Madison, MS; Johnny (Dianne) of Madison, AL; grandchildren Sam (Donna) Gilmore of Brandon, MS; Sarah Kathryn Gray of Memphis, TN; Grant Gilmore of Madison, MS; Krissa (James) Beers of Tiger, GA; great-grandchildren Daniel Rogers of Chattanooga, TN; Hannah Beers of Tiger, GA; Jordan White of Brandon, MS; Sydney Gray of Memphis, TN; brothers George Buck Gilmore of Jackson, MS; Kenny (Linda) Gilmore of Brandon, MS; sister-in-law Christine Gilmore of Mobile, AL; brother-in-law Darwin (Carol) Rigdon of Pearl, MS and many nieces and nephews.
