He was a son of Robert G. McGuigan and Patricia M. Loughran. He did not marry.

OBITUARY-DEATH: 7 Jul 1976. Student was Victim- A University of B.C. geology student has been identified as one of the three men killed in the crash of a helicopter in the Northwest Territories at the weekend. John Stephen McGuigan 18 of 75 Glengarry, West Vancouver, was a member of an oil exploration crew killed when their copter crashed 180 miles east of Yellowknife. Pilot of the craft was identified as geologist Mike Macdonnell 41, of Calgary. The third man, also of Calgary, was William Hill, 32. McGuigan a second year geology student as USC, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. R.G. McGuigan and a member of a pioneer family which included Vancouver's first city clerk, first coroner, and tenth mayor-W. .J. McGuigan, who held office in 1904. He is survived by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
