Major League Baseball Player. Born in Hamburg, Pennsylvania, he was a catcher making his debut with the Buffalo Bisons on September 6, 1879. For twelve seasons, he played with the Buffalo Bisons (1870-85, 1890), Detroit Wolverines (1886-88) and Pittsburgh Alleghenys in 1889. In 1886, he hit for the cycle, was a member of the 1887 Detroit Wolverines World Series Championship team and earned a reputation as one of the best hitters and bare-handed catchers in the game. He concluded his career with a record of 1256 hits, 764 runs scored, 28 homeruns, 644 runs batted in and a .286 batting average. He died at age 55 in St. Louis Missouri.
