AUGUSTA HOLMES THOMAS, 93, born April 9, 1915, died July 1, 2008. Beloved wife of the late Kendall E. Thomas. Dear mother of Harold K. Thomas (Jean) of Pine, CO, Wilna T. Derr (Wm. Christopher) of Sunnyvale, CA, and Marilyn T. Pelehach (John A.) of Oak Ridge, NC. Dear grandmother of nine and great grandmother of two. Preceded in death by her parents, Godfrey and Augusta Gresch Holmes, and sister, Ann Holmes. Due to the premature death of her mother, she was lovingly raised by her paternal Aunt Mary and Arland Atkinson, as well as her devoted and loving father and step-mother, Godfrey and Wilna Edwards Holmes. Her father founded The Godfrey Holmes Printing Company on Euclid Avenue in 1889. Mrs. Thomas graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1933, Ohio Wesleyan University in 1937, and received her Master's Degree from Columbia University. She worked as a dietician at MSU, Yale University, and Connecticut College for Women before returning to Cleveland where she married Kendall E. Thomas in 1948. She was active in Fairmount Presbyterian Church where she served as Deacon and Elder and participated in the Women's Guild. Mrs. Thomas spent countless hours volunteering at the Shaker Historical Society where she started the Spirit Tree Gift Shop and an Endowment Fund for educational purposes. She enjoyed bridge, was skillful in needlework and crafts. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to the Shaker Historical Society, 16740 S. Park Blvd., Shaker Heights, Ohio 44120, a charity of one's choice, or the Memorial Fund of Fairmount Presbyterian Church, 2757 Fairmount Blvd., Cleveland Heights, Ohio, where a Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 5, at 11 a.m.
