Based on census records and family tree information on Ancestry.com, Robert Palmer Quinn was born about 1854 in Connecticut. His father, John L. Quinn, was a native of Ireland. His mother, Harriet Palmer, died when he was young; his father eventually remarried and had several more children. The Quinn family came to California in 1867 and were early residents of Mayfield (Palo Alto).

On January 19, 1909, the San Jose newspapers reported that Robert "Bob" Quinn, a retired rancher and "well-known character" had committed suicide in a barn on Amiel E. Messmer's ranch on the Los Gatos-Santa Clara road near Vasona Station. Mr. Messmer testified at the coroner's inquest that he had known Quinn for about 15 years. Quinn was 55 years of old and "probably" born in Ireland. He had never married, but he had a step-mother and half-brother residing in Palo Alto. Messmer said that Quinn had come to see him a month earlier and asked if he could board with him for a few weeks. He had recently left a job in San Jose where he had worked for 12 years. Quinn seemed downcast and melancholy about his ability to find work, saying that liquor had undermined his health. (San Jose Mercury, Jan. 19, 1909, p.1; San Jose Evening News, Jan. 19, 1909, p.3; San Jose Mercury, Jan. 20, 1909, p.12.)

San Jose Mercury, Jan. 22, 1909. "QUINN—In San Jose, January 18, 1909, Robert Quinn, a native of Ireland, aged 55 years. ... Interment Oak Hill."

Letter for administration of Robert P. Quinn's estate were issued to A. A. Quinn (probably his younger half-brother Albert A. Quinn). (San Jose Mercury, Feb. 6, 1909, p.3.)
