Mildred married Theodore Edward Tuomi on December 28, 1951 and was married to him until his passing on December 25, 1974.
She later married Arthur E. Kay on November 7, 1975. Mildred and Arthur owned and operated M & A Insulation where she was the bookkeeper. She and Arthur were together until his passing on May 23, 2006.
She was a lifelong member of the Salvation Army, where she taught Sunday school, was also a member of the League of Mercy and the Salvation Army String Band.
Mildred enjoyed singing and playing the piano. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed needlework. Mildred especially loved to travel; "she had itchy feet".
Mildred is survived by a brother, Leonard (Janet) Barber; a sister, Major Marilyn (John) Werner; and sisters in laws, Elinor Barber, Dorothy (Bob) Haldeman and Della McCullogh. She is also survived by her children, Cheryl (Glen) Owens, Ruth Wagner, Suanne (Tim Mitchell) Tuomi; grandchildren, Tiffany (Robert) Redmond, Jay (Bobbie) Jackson, Tanya Boardman, Thea (Bill) Platz, and Nathan (Lethy) Bosey. Additionally she is survived by step-sons, Ron (Kathy) Kay, Don (Donna) Kay and Tom (Andrea) Kay. Mildred is also survived by 10 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren (with 2 more on the way) and numerous nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands Theodore Tuomi and Arthur Kay; a sister, Phyllis Edwards; a brother, Reverend Donald Barber; and children Theodore Edward Tuomi II, Sharon Tuomi and Nancy Tuomi.
The family would also like to extend a special thanks to her compassionate caregivers.
A funeral service will be held at 10am on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Advantage Funeral and Cremation Services, 7000 W State St. Rockford. Major Dale Tollerud of the Salvation Army will be officiating. A visitation will be held on Monday night from 6pm to 8pm at Advantage Funeral and Cremation.. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
