Nadine D. Baker, 71, of Las Vegas, passed away April 23, 2009. Born in Fairfield, Idaho, June 24, 1937, to Harold and Mae Brooks, she graduated from Fairfield High School, where she played basketball for four years and held office for her class. Nadine was also a Girl Scout. She attended Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho, and graduated with a B.S. degree. Nadine began her career in Idaho Falls and then traveled to Nevada. She married Clyde L. Baker, June 14, 1968, in Las Vegas. Nadine taught school in the Clark County School District for 35 years. Beginning in 1964, she taught fourth grade at J.M. Ullom, Gene Ward and Elbert Edwards Elementary Schools. Nadine was the epitome of a dedicated, compassionate teacher. After retiring from teaching, she became very involved with volunteer work. Nadine was one of the original volunteers at the Clark County Wetlands Park and continued to volunteer there until her death. Since 2000, Nadine was a member of the Henderson Chapter of the Retired Public Employees of Nevada. She was membership chairman, state delegate from the local chapter and, in 2008, was presented with a special recognition award from the state office in appreciation for her dedication to RPEN. Over the years, Nadine held several offices in "High Rollers," a local branch of the antique car club VMCCA. She especially enjoyed touring with her late husband, Clyde, in their 1937 and 1957 Chevrolets. Sunday mornings, she attended services at Central Christian Church. Nadine loved to travel, at home and abroad, and was an avid reader. Working in the yard gave her much pleasure and her lovely flowers and pecans have been thoroughly enjoyed by others. She was a confidant to many friends. Her selfless love and compassion will be greatly missed. Nadine is survived by her daughters, Debbie Marra (John) of Pahrump, and Susan Kocher (Jim) of Bridgeport, Ohio; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Darla (Lynn) Barkdull of Lake Stevens, Wash.; one brother, Jim (Leone) Brooks of Fairfield, Idaho; two nieces; and four nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde L. Baker; parents, Harold and Mae Brooks; and one nephew, Hale Brooks. A memorial service will be at noon Sunday, May 3, at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Clark County Wetlands Park, 7050 E. Wetlands Park Lane, Las Vegas, NV 89122.
