Jonas married Barbara Ernst on October 11, 1898, in Peel Township, Wellington County, Ontario. A son, Samuel (1899-1968), was born on August 26, 1899.

Around 1900, Jonas, Barbara and Samuel moved from Ontario to Emmet County, Michigan, where Jonas was a farmer. The couple had three children born in Michigan:
- Jacob (1902-1912)
- Marion (1906-2000)
- Leah (1909-1939)

Jonas and Barbara's marriage ended, and in August 1911, Barbara married a widower named Theodore Howell.

At some time, Jonas returned to Ontario. He died at the Waterloo County House of Industry and Refuge, Kitchener, Ontario, on January 8, 1935. (The House served as a home for those in need of food and shelter and for the elderly.)
