He was born in Stuart, Patrick County, Virginia on 6 May 1933. He was predeceased by his parents Ervin Thompson and Gertrude Hill Walker, his second wife Peggy Wood Lily Walker, and one brother Harvey Leon Walker.
Surviving are two children, Cheryl Walker Penn and Harley A. Walker, Jr.; siblings, Onie Peterson Kane and Jerry Walker; stepdaughter, Leigh Ann Moran; and two step grandsons, Colin Moran and Sean Moran.
Harley served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War, and afterward received a AAS degree from National Business College in Roanoke, VA. He worked as a Software Developer and Analyst in Information Systems and was primarily responsible for the VISA Bank Card systems at Dominion Bank. After his retirement from the banking industry, he worked at Oakey's North Chapel, and volunteered at the Presbyterian Community Center helping homelessness and poverty in the Roanoke Valley. He was an active member of the Northminster Presbyterian Church and the Lion's Club of the Roanoke Valley. Harley loved NASCAR and was a devoted fan of Dale Earnhardt.
We would like to thank the many caregivers who cared for Harley during the last 6 years of his life, and a very special thank you to James and Cassandra Gordon, where he lived in their VA-sponsored foster home for over 3 years and thought of him as family.
In recognition of Mr. Walker's service to our country, a graveside service by Moody's with military funeral honors is scheduled for family and friends on 23 July 2021 at 11:00 AM at Bouldin Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery. If family and friends desire, donations may be made to the Northminster Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, Va, or donations may be made to a church or charity of their choice in memory of Harley.
