George was only 14 years old when on May 26, 1957 at 3:15pm he drowned while swimming in muddy water with other friends in an old river bed, 1/4 of a mile west of Salcedo, Scott County, MO. He called for help but sank before anyone could get to him. He was found and taken by Raymond Crews to the Welsh Funeral Home in Sikeston, Scott County, MO.

He was survived by his parents; Doy Walton and Bernice Bowman Bell, one sister; Dorothy Bell Clay and Bo of Gray Ridge, five brothers; Steve Vernon and Jewell Stephens Bell of Sikeston, Jo Tom and Ethel Duckworth Bell of Dexter, Chester and Jeanette Polly Bell of Sikeston, Charlie and Carolyn Poe Bell of St. Louis and Kenneth Bell of the home in Salcedo, three nieces; Janet Lynn Bell and Linda Gaye Bell of Sikeston, Ruth Ann Bell of Dexter, one nephew; Randy Clay of Gray Ridge. His maternal grandparents; Joe and Mertie Bowman of Formasa, AR and paternal grandmother; Delona "Lona" Owens Bell of Sikeston.

His paternal grandfather; Thomas Newton Bell proceeded him in death in 1950.
