Orval Conrad Cunningham was born on August 23, 1889 in Cherryvale, Kansas, the son of James Alfred Cunningham (1842–1928) and Nancy Jane (Ray) Cunningham (1852–1914).

He was married on December 12, 1952 in Hernando County, Florida to Media "Thelma" (Steele) Carr.

A retired restaurant manager and living at 817 2nd Avenue South in Nashville, Tennessee, Orval was a member of the Elks and attended Lindsley Avenue Church of Christ. He was 72 years old, married and diabetic when he had repeated strokes and died on August 11, 1962 at Davidson County Hospital, where he had been for twelve days.

Survivors included his widow Thelma, stepdaughter Verna Anne Crr of Nashville and sisters Mrs Blanche Major of Pueblo, Colorado and Mrs Edith DeLapp of Denver, Colorado.

Burial was on August 14th in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.
