Sister Mary Rosella, born February 28, 1929, in Aragon, New Mexico, was born to Jose M. and Tomasa (Aragon) Romero. She was named Honorata Romero and baptized Maria Honorata, but often called Maria Nora. Maria was the sixth of nine children (five brothers and three sisters). Maria Honorata entered the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother on August 6, 1949. When she entered the novitiate on August 12, 1950 she received the name Sister Mary Rosella. Sister professed her Final Vows on August 12, 1957 in Milwaukee, WI. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee August 14, 1977 and her Golden Jubilee on August 15, 1999, both in Broken Arrow, OK and her 60th Jubilee on August 12, 2009 in Oshkosh, WI.
As a Sister of the Sorrowful Mother, Sister Mary Rosella ministered as a teacher and principal in Catholic Elementary schools in Estherville, IA; Villanueva, NM and El Dorado, KS. She ministered as a Director of Religious Education in Albuquerque, NM; Roswell, NM and San Antonio, TX. She also ministered to the Tigua Indians in El Paso, TX, and in Pastoral Care in Oklahoma. Sister retired to SSM Franciscan Courts on January 11, 2010.
Sr. Rosella was known for her passion for dancing whenever she heard music being played along with writing poetry.
Sister Mary Rosella was preceded in death by her parents and seven of her siblings (Lucy Montoya, Stella Herrera, Jessie Romero, Patrick Romero, Joe Romero, Patrick Romero and Nickie Romero). She is survived by her sister Virginia (Vic) Aragon along with nieces, nephews and several cousins.
Homecoming will be at 4:00 p.m. at SSM Franciscan Courts on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SSM Franciscan Courts on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at 10:30 am with Rev. Tom Long officiating. Burial will take place at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Oshkosh, WI. Memorials are asked to be directed to Pro Life organizations. Fiss & Bills Poklasny Funeral Home oversees the arrangements.
