Daniel Charles Bennett, age 74, of Carey, died on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at home with his loving family by his side following an extended illness.

On February 16, 1947, Dan was born in Hammond, Indiana, the second of five children of the late James G. and Violet R. (Ross) Bennett. As a family, they moved to Carey, Ohio, when he was in grade school.

A veteran of the Vietnam War, Dan enlisted to serve his beloved country in the US Navy. He worked as an electrician and engineer on both the USS Midway and the USS Preserver (ARS-8).

Upon his honorable discharge, Dan returned home to Carey, where he worked as a truck driver for thirty plus years. He worked for both Tab Trucking and then Highway Trucking in Findlay. He also was a member of the American Legion in Carey.

One fateful day while working at the Consolidated Biscuit Company, Dan met his future bride, Shirley Thomas. He eventually won her heart over a game of pinochle, and from there the rest is history. They were married on December 5, 1998, and have been by each other's side through thick and thin the last 22 years. She especially loved whenever Dan would grab her hand and sing her his favorite karaoke song, Can't Help Falling in Love, by Elvis.

Inheriting a love for fishing from his father, Dan loved to cast a line any chance he got. Most everyone in his family has an infamous story of their many fishing adventures. Another favorite pastime for the entire Bennett family is playing cards. Every Saturday and Sunday, you would bring your quarters and pennies to prove who the best card player was at his parent's house. They loved everything from spades and euchre, to their favorite game of poker. He also was a huge Pittsburgh Steeler fan, and could always be found with a Coca-cola in his hand.

One thing about Dan, he always kept you on your toes. He was an ornery jokester, who would do or say anything to get a rise out of you. He often had everyone's stomach hurting from laughing so hard around him. He also had a heart of gold and would do anything for you. He was the first person everyone in his family would call, even though he would also give you a piece of his mind about it.

Dan will be dearly missed by his wife, Shirley Bennett; five children: Lori Bennett of Jacksonville, FL, Eugene "Charlie" (Pamela) Bennett of Seattle, WA, Melody (Rodney) Smith, Pastor Dennis Bennett, and April Bennett, all three of Jacksonville, FL; a step-daughter, Tiffany (Billy) LaRoe of Fostoria; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; two sisters: Diane (Stephen Franklin) Shifflet, and Darlene (Ron) Edwards; numerous nieces and nephews; "adopted" daughter, Wendy Riedlinger; and his canine companion, Baby.

Including his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his step-daughter, Danielle Bentley; granddaughter, Harmony Hoffbauer; and two brothers: David and Darrell "Bebo" Bennett.

His family will greet friends from 10 am – Noon on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey. Services honoring his life will follow there at Noon, with his son, Pastor Dennis Bennett officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Carey Honor Guard will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home.
