The second son of Ralph E. and Helen Hayes, Richard was born December 29, 1919 in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Rich graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1938 and then attended South Dakota State University. Shortly after December 7, 1941, Richard joined the US Army Air Corps and flew thirty-five B-29 missions over Japan during World War II, earning two Distinguished Flying Crosses for heroism and extraordinary achievement during aerial flights.
Following the war, Rich attended the University of Montana graduating with degree in Forestry. While in Montana, he met and married Eleanor Brittain. In 1951 Rich and Eleanor moved back to Aberdeen with their young son to start Hayes Brothers Printing with older brother, Jack Hayes.
In 2000, Rich and Eleanor celebrated their 50-year anniversary in Sun City with their five children and most of their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Eleanor passed away in Sun City in 2001.
Rich served in the Air Force Reserve for 25 years reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was dedicated to the YMCA and served as Board Chairman for several years. Rich was active in several service organizations including Kiwanis, Rotary and the Elks Club, and he was a dedicated member of the Aberdeen Masonic Temple and the Shriners.
In addition to his wife, Eleanor, he was preceded in death by brothers, Jack, Donald and Paul as well as sister, Dorothy. Rich is survived by his five children and their families ; in addition to six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and dear friend "T.K".
Richard will be laid to rest in the Black Hills National Cemetery next to Eleanor.
