David R. 'Dave' Aaberg, 80, of Grand Island died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2009, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Mr. Aaberg was born on Aug. 2, 1929, at Starbuck, Minn., to Anton and Ida (Teigen) Aaberg.

Those left to cherish his memory are two sons, Wayne Aaberg of Gulfport, Miss., and John Aaberg of Chappell; a daughter, Krystyn Aaberg of Greenville, N.C.; stepdaughter and her husband, Marsha and Roy Trujillo of Grand Island; and two stepsons and their wives, Richard and Jennifer Cook and Michael and Connie Cook, all of Lawrence, Kan.

He is also survived by six grandchildren, Shelby (Laura) Aaberg of Gering, Sean (Chris) Aaberg, USMC, of Greenville, N.C., Jessica (Josh) Paakula of Gulfbreeze, Fla., Erica, David and Kiersten Aaberg of Navarre, Fla., and one great grandchild, Kailani Ann Paakula. Eight step grandchildren, Shannon (Matt) Moore, Staci (Joel) Zuerlein, all of Lincoln, Stephanie (James) Abney of Topeka, Kan., Kyle (Sara) Cook of Chapman, Kan., Casey (Brianne) Cook of Lawrence, Kan., Jason (Kris) Cook of Plattsmouth, Rochelle (Doug) Whiles of Denver and Amy Patricia Trujillo of Grand Island. 11 step great grandchildren, Ava AnnMarie Whiles, Callie Cook, Makayla, Gessica and Wyatt Cook, Cayman and Kiyana Cook, T.J. Martin and Kaley Johnson, Hailee Abney and Logan Zuerlein.

David was preceded in death by a brother, Alfred Aaberg and three sisters, Mable Danelz, Evelyn Anderson and Lorraine Anderson.

David grew up in Starbuck, Minn., and received his education at Starbuck High School, South Dakota State University, University of Wyoming, University of Missouri, and UNL in Lincoln. David's first marriage was to Bette Christofferson on July 9, 1951, at Rapid City, S.D. The couple lived in Minnesota, Wyoming and North Platte. That union was dissolved in 1977. David married Patricia Cook on June 3, 1978, at Carson City, Nev. That union was dissolved in 1999. Patricia Cook remained a special friend.

David was employed by the North Platte Public School Systems as a high school teacher and coach of track and field, football, baseball and basketball. He taught high school and coached for over 40 years. David retired in 1991 after 11 years at Chadron High School, Chadron, where he had outstanding records of success. He held a lifetime teaching certificate in Minnesota.

David was a member of Fron Lutheran-Evangelical Synod Church in Starbuck, Minn. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, stamp collecting and all sports. He enjoyed gardening, reading, working crossword puzzles, music and singing. He taught and also loved to study World History and Environmental Studies. He was an enthusiastic Husker fan. David was very proud of his Norwegian heritage.
