Irene Austin, 98, of Lanesboro, died Oct. 22, 2007, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford. She had been a resident there for the past eight years.
Irene Nelson was born Feb. 10, 1909, in Crosby, N.D. Following her father's death, her mother moved the family to Fountain. She completed high school and one year of normal training in Preston, then taught in Fillmore County rural schools until her marriage to Ernest Austin on June 10, 1939. In 1951 she returned to teaching and taught 20 years in rural schools. She later taught third grade in Lanesboro for nine years until she retired.
Mrs. Austin was a member of Union Prairie Ladies Aid, and Circle, and taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed quilting, playing Whist and 500, and having coffee with family and friends. Her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1990. She resided in the Kenilworth apartments in Lanesboro prior to moving to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home.
She is survived by two daughters, LaVaughn (Ted Craig) of San Francisco and Pauline (Dave Athnos) of La Crosse, Wis.; and a sister, Elvera (Ray Johnson) of Chatfield. Other survivors include four grandchildren, the Rev. Darin Easler (Bradley Schmeling) of Atlanta, Detra (Shawn Dettmann) of Lockridge, Iowa, Daniel Craig (Xiao) of China, and Sara Craig of San Francisco; two great-grandchildren, Makena Austin and Hannah Mae Dettmann; former son-in-law, Marlin Easler; and Paul Bernau, whom she cared for as a son.
The family requests memorials to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home or Union Prairie Church.
