James William "Jimmy" Cummings, Jr, age 75, went home to the Lord Friday, June 25, 2021 surrounded by his family at home in Gulfport. He was born in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Jimmy spent time between Washington DC and the MS Gulf Coast where he attended St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis as a boarding student.
He was a 1968 graduate of the University of Mississippi where he met his beloved wife Shelley Harrington and they married after graduation.
He very was proud to serve in the United States Marine Corp as a First Lt. serving in Vietnam. After Vietnam he went to Fort Worth, Texas to mentor under Ross Perot. He was an officer at the First City Bank in Houston, TX and served as a former city councilman in West University Place in Houston.
In the mid 80's Jim returned to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to work for Leo Seal as a Trust Officer. He was an investment banker for over forty years. He served as a Portfolio Manager at the Peoples Bank. He was a member of the Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Gulfport Yacht Club.
Jim was friendly, loved being around people, and had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed fishing, boating and sitting on the porch with his beloved dogs, especially Cupid the bulldog. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and "Paw Paw"
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Marriane Cummings; and siblings Edwina Cregger and Diane Kober.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shelley Cummings; children, Mary James Cummings, Katie Aschenbach Doucet (Tommy); grandchildren, Lainey Aschenbach and Chloe Aschenbach; step-grandchildren, John Harrison Doucet, Dawson Doucet, and Louis Doucet; and great-grandchild, Claire Aschenbach Pique.
Jimmy was a friend of Bill and Bob and he had a great passion for helping others in need. The family requests memorial donations to "Beach Group" Handsboro Presbyterian Church, 1304 E. Pass Road, Gulfport, MS 39507.
The family extends their thanks to Dr. Douglas Lanier and staff for their care of our father.
The funeral service is Thursday, July 1, 2021 at 12:30 P.M. at St. James Catholic Church, Gulfport with the visitation at 11:00 a.m. Interment follows at Biloxi National Cemetery, Biloxi.
