U.S. political leader. A delegate from Illinois Territory, Pope persuaded Congress to set the boundary of the territory further north to include the site of Chicago. Pope was the father of General John Pope. He was elected delegate to Congress from Illinois territory, 1816-18. When there were barely 35,000 people in the territory, he drew up the congressional resolution for the admission of Illinois as a state. After Illinois was admitted to the Union in 1818, he was appointed U.S. district court judge, 1819-50, by President Monroe. Pope County, Ill. was named to honor him.
