K. Lynette Erwin Waller, 60, of Stillwater, Oklahoma passed away on June 24, 2021 after a long and relentless battle with breast cancer.
Lynette was born June 26, 1960 to Lawrence and Iris Erwin in Cherokee, Oklahoma. After graduating from C.E. Donart High School in 1978, she studied music and vocal performance at Oklahoma Baptist University. She later went on to pursue graduate studies in vocal performance and pedagogy at Oklahoma State University.
Lynette was a lifelong vocalist, lover of the arts, and music teacher. She was active in regional and local community choirs throughout her life and was a proud member of the Stillwater Chamber Singers. She taught voice and piano, and constantly shared her passion and irrepressible joy for music with nearly everyone who encountered her.
In addition to her devotion to music, Lynette was a fierce and outspoken community advocate in the areas of LGBT rights and domestic violence intervention. Following the 2014 Supreme Court ruling that struck down gay marriage bans in Oklahoma and throughout the United States, she and her longtime partner, Kaye, became the first same-sex couple to obtain a marriage license in Payne County. She ultimately found her true calling as a victim advocate at Wings of Hope. She was proud to have worked with community leaders, including police services throughout the region, to train responders in trauma-informed intervention, and she touched countless lives in the process.
Lynette was predeceased by her mother, Iris Erwin. She is survived by her wife, Kaye Waller, her three children, Lauren Weaver-Swartout, Heather Weaver, and Nathan Weaver, her father, Lawrence Erwin, her siblings, Monte Erwin and Karla Storm, her two stepsons, Joel Wiseman and Micah Atwell, and two grandchildren.
In honor of Lynette's love of music and theater, the family will host a memorial concert at the Stillwater High School Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, June 29 at 11:00 a.m. The concert will feature loved ones across the many stages of Lynette's life journey. All are welcome to come and celebrate Lynette's life with us.
