Charles Bauer
May 16, 1943 - June 15, 2021
Palmetto Bay, Florida - Charles Ronald Bauer, M.D. (Charlie), passed away on June 15, 2021, at the age of 78 while surrounded by his loving family. Charlie was born in New York City, NY on May 16, 1943. He attended the Holy Cross Grammar School and was a proud member of the Class of 1957 from which he maintained lifelong friendships with his classmates. He attended High School at Power Memorial Academy in New York City, NY (1961), Iona College in New Rochelle, NY (1965), and Medical School at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV (1969). Charlie met his soulmate and wife of 48 years, Rita, while working on his Pediatric Internship & Residency at St. Louis Children's Hospital. He then completed his Neonatology Fellowship at Montreal Children's Hospital in Montreal, Canada.
Charlie established the Neonatal Follow-up Program at the University of Miami Mailman Center for Child Development 48 years ago. This program was among the first of its kind in the nation and has helped thousands of at-risk infants over the years. This follow-up program evolved into the Early Steps Program, an early intervention program serving infants and toddlers from the community at large, making Dr. Bauer a pioneer in the field of early intervention in Florida.
Charlie also played a major role in the development of the Neonatology division at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He remained in close contact with almost 150 graduate fellows that he trained and kept them together as a large family.
Dr. Bauer was the Co-Director of the Miami Neonatology International Conference, a postgraduate educational activity offered for 45+ years to participants from around the world. Dr. Bauer was an excellent clinician and educator, a true friend to all, and a humble welcoming person.
His love and dedication to his family was one of his top priorities in life and an example for all of us. Beyond his extensive contributions to the fields of Developmental Medicine, Early Intervention, and Neonatology, his family meant everything to him and was his greatest accomplishment. His love and dedication to his wife, Rita; his children Gabrielle, Kristen, Charles Jr.; and his grandchildren Sophia and Charles III, undoubtedly brought him the greatest joy in life.
Dr. Bauer will always be remembered and dearly missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy continues to be honored through his family, those at-risk infants whose lives he saved, and the professionals he mentored who continue to carry out his work, wisdom, and teachings on a daily basis.
